For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11)
Living in the will of God can be both daunting and exhilarating, yet God requires that we remain in his perfect will every step of the way. However, how do I know that I am indeed walking in God’s will? How do I know what God expects of me and how do I know what pleases him? Questions like this highlight the need to look for and track the purposes of God in our lives.
Growing up in Africa, I was always fascinated by the Bushmen of Kalahari, who were expert trackers. I loved watching documentaries about how they would set out to track down a Kudu buck with no more than a skin filled with water for their journey and a bow and arrow for the hunt. They would walk for days tracking this beautiful buck, looking for signs along the way that would reveal the direction the animal was heading. Bushmen are expert trackers. Eventually, after many days of trekking through the semi-desert, they would track down their prize and take home food enough to feed their children for weeks.
The Bible tells us that God knows the plans he has for us, which is very encouraging, indeed. However, the reality of this statement is, it is he who knows the plans he has for us; we don’t, not until he reveals them to us. Therefore, just like these expert trackers of the Kalahari, you and I need track God’s plans and purposes by watching for the signs of his move along the paths of life. As we acknowledge God in all we do, we need to constantly listen for sounds of his voice and watch for the move of his hand upon our circumstances, trusting that he will direct us toward our prize – his perfect will.
